Explore options suitable for your chooks

Choose from several types of hen houses, all designed to protect your chooks. Whether you have a couple of chickens or a small flock, we’ve got chicken coops to suit.

Our ecoFLEX™hen houses

House up to eight chickens with the thoughtfully constructed large ecoFLEX™ coop, a sustainable material that resists moisture and deters pests. This durable design ensures maintenance is a breeze—it’s easy to clean and your chooks are safe from other animals

For little flocks of four chickens or fewer, our small ecoFLEX™ coops are perfect. They deliver superior weather protection and long-lasting good looks. With thoughtful features like a raised floor, secure nesting box, sliding roof for quick cleaning, and a smart, paintable finish, it’s a practical and stylish house your chooks will love.

Both our small and large ecoFLEX™ coops are available with a built-in pen, too.

Our wooden hen houses

For something a little more rustic, our small wooden coop is a cosy setup for 2–3 hens—and just as suitable for small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs. Alternatively, our spacious and sturdy large wooden coop is a dream setup for backyard chicken keepers, designed to house up to 8 hens safe, dry, and comfortable year-round.

Both wooden coops feature raised sleeping areas to keep hens or small pets warm and dry, along with separate nesting boxes for easy egg collection. They include thoughtful details like windows for natural light, spacious access points, and pull-out trays that make cleaning a breeze. Assemble with ease, too, thanks to a straightforward DIY kitset that gets your chook house up and running in no time.

Chook house features to look out for:

  • An extra-wide ramp for conveniently entering and exiting the run.
  • A ventilation window that can be closed in the winter or during inclement weather.
  • Raised sleeping area to protect against moisture.
  • Continued run underneath the coop itself to protect chickens from the elements while outside the coop.
  • Extra-thick metal, mesh wire for security.
  • Water-tight design to ensure your chickens are always warm and dry.
  • *Remember, your chicken coop is not intended to be a full-time home. Your chickens require several hours each day of free ranging for optimal health.

    Frequently asked questions

How many chickens are you allowed in a residential area?

In New Zealand, you can house up to six poultry on your residential property if it’s smaller than 2000 square metres. For larger properties, this number increases to 12. You may also need to obtain a permit from your local council.

Chickens must have access to more than three square metres of land, a rainproof coop, a secluded nesting area, and scratching space, and be well cared for in an environment that is regularly cleaned and maintained.

How big should a chicken coop be in NZ?

Allow three to four square feet of coop space per chicken if they have access to a large run, or six to 10 square feet per bird if their run is more limited.

Should you lock chickens in a coop at night?

Yes. It’s recommended that you lock your chickens inside the coop overnight. Chickens are vulnerable at nighttime, and nocturnal pests may be able to find their way into the run. Keeping them in the coop offers necessary security.

How big does a chicken coop need to be for two chickens?

For two chickens, aim for at least 2-2.5 square metres of indoor coop space if they have regular access to a large outdoor run. If space outside is limited, consider increasing it to 3.5 to 6 square metres to keep your hens healthy and comfortable.
