Product overview

The natural alternative to polyurethane, Osmo's Polyx®-Oil in Matt is a traditional Hardwax Oil recommended for finishing interior timber flooring, timber furniture, timber beams, sarking, paneling and childrens toys, cots and bassinets.

Suitable for most timbers, including pine, macrocarpa, jarrah, oak, beech, some eucalypts and rimu and all plywoods.

As durable as polyurethane, and far easier to repair when scratched or worn. Easy to apply, with enough coverage for approximately 24 square metres per litre with one coat.
Sanding in between coats is generally not necessary.

Application can be by roller or brush. If using a roller, it should be micro fibre with a nap of no more than 5mm. Care should be taken to limit the amount of oil held in the roller, otherwise over application can result.

For timber furniture, paneling, architraves, doors, window sills etc, application can be by roller or paint brush. A lint free cloth may also be used. In this case, more than 2 coats will be required to achieve the same finish as a brush or roller.

Oily and resinous timbers such as Matai, Totara, Kwila, and Spotted Gum require a different finishing process. The use of normal Polyx®-Oil, on these timbers may cause drying issues. Download Osmo's oily/resinous guide below for more info on these timbers.

Polyx®-Oil finishes are easy to maintain with a plant based detergent for wiping down the timber when needed.

Oil - timber flooring

I decided to use oil instead of polyurethane on my natural timber for a garden studio. Was recommended to try oil by a friend who is a painter and decorator. I wanted a slightly softer look than polyurethane. It’s super easy to apply much less fumes and I love the look of it. You need to let it cure a bit before putting items on it but it dried really well. I deliberately went for a reclaimed timber look on my flooring but think the oil would be just as lovely on pristine new boards also.
