Is the 400kg limit for each individual shelf (of which there 4) ie up to total of 1600kg?

Yes that is correct, total load rating of 1600kg provided that it is evenly spread and does not exceed 400kg per shelf

They don't come with pre-drilled plates for this but it would be simple enough to rig up a solution.

Would I be able to cut the uprights down in height
A:
Yes you can cut the uprights down to suit the height you want. It does have a powder coat finish, so the exposed cut end would be susceptible to rust. We would recommend putting a protective coat on the exposed cut ends.

Nice and sturdy

Great set of shelves, nice and sturdy for my garden shed and storage unit. Will be buying another one soon, so they can make up the full wall of my storage unit. Very easy to put together with a soft mallet.
