Would this size crate be suitable to transport an 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy from Wanganui to Hamilton (via car) or would the medium size be better? Thank you.

If they are pretty chilled out and will be sleeping most of the time it should be fine. I would size up if you think they might want to sit up and walk around a little

It may be a bit small for when he grows, the medium or large size may be more suitable. Take a look at the dog breed crate size suggestion chart in one of the images on the website, whilst it doesn't show the Lowchen breed you can compare with other similar size dogs.
