Does the pump work to pump water?

These pumps are made traditionally and contain a leather piston, so yes it can pump water, however this is fairly inefficient and as such they are intended to be mainly ornamental.

Yes, you would need to remove the leather diaphram and potentially seal the main pump shaft that exits through the top.

I was disappointed as I was expecting a black cast iron water pump and the one I received was green.

Case Iron water pump

The pump looked good but the assembly was very rough, bolts that were too long. Casings that needed to filed down. A couple of hours work to sort it out but overall with a few modifications it looks good and is working.
