Need to move heavy loads or lots of things at once? A quality trailer is an effective solution for tradies and DIY’ers alike. But before you buy a new trailer, you’ll have to consider factors like its load capacity, towing capacity, and features. Read our guide to help you decide on the right trailer for different needs.
How to choose a trailer
1. Payload
Every trailer has a different maximum weight limit. Check that this load capacity can accommodate the weight you plan to haul.
Generally speaking, a tandem axle trailer is ideal for heavy loads of up to 1,500kg. For lighter loads up to 500kg, a single axle is more appropriate.
2. Towing vehicle capacity
Braked trailers offer greater safety and stability than unbraked models. Keep in mind that the weight of the trailer and load shouldn’t exceed the mass of the towing vehicle.
Your motor vehicle’s handbook should list:
The maximum weight of a laden trailer (without brakes) that can be towed by the vehicle.
The maximum weight of a laden trailer (with brakes) that can be towed by the vehicle.
For approximate vehicle loading capacities, refer to our guide at the bottom of the page.
3. Caged or uncaged
Caged trailers are perfect for bulky items like beds, furniture, and small ATVs. Make sure to check that the weight of your contents doesn’t exceed the trailer's load capacity.
Non-caged trailers are ideal for general purposes. Easy tray access makes them especially useful for transporting landscaping supplies, such as pebbles, compost, and sand.
4. Tandem axle or single axle
Single axle trailers feature one axle with one wheel on both sides. Tandem axle trailers feature two axles, each with one wheel on both sides (four wheels in total).
Single axle trailers
Lighter to tow due to reduced friction from tyres.
Tend to bounce and sway more.
Better gas mileage.
Easier to manoeuvre and less stress on tyres when turning.
One person can move the trailer around to hook it up to the vehicle.
When loading a single axle, balance the weight over the axle and secure the items to avoid sliding.
Tandem axle trailers
Front and rear closing doors.
Better stability and smoother riding.
Carries up to 1500kg.
Turning can be more difficult on tyres due to the lowered turning radius.
Less powerful vehicles will struggle with the weight and friction of tandem axles when carrying large loads. Ensure you evenly distribute the load weight over both axles, or else there may be too much stress on a single axle.
When attaching, the vehicle often needs to be moved to the trailer.
5. Model
Of course, you’ll want to ensure that the trailer is high-quality and long-lasting for your needs. Look for steel trailers for reliable longevity and corrosion resistance. Check product reviews to ensure they work according to the seller’s claims.
While you may be tempted to buy second-hand, buying a new trailer can help ensure quality. You’ll also want to have a warranty, given the costlier nature of the product. A greater warranty period can signify the manufacturer's confidence in producing long-lasting, durable trailers.
Trade Tested’s affordable galvanised steel trailers include a five-year repair or replacement warranty, one of the longest on the market, assuring customers that our trailers are up for the task.
Trailer Post-Purchase Guide
Assemble your trailer
Once you’ve received your trailer, you’ll have to assemble it (if you’re picking it up from our Auckland warehouse, we’ll assemble it for free!).
Assembly instructions are included with your order. Our trailers take approximately two hours to set up. You’ll need a ratchet set and a crescent for assembly.
Register and license your trailer
Before you use your trailer on the road, you need to register it and get a warrant of fitness (WoF).
Trailers under 3500kg don’t require a vehicle identification number (VIN). Complete a non-VIN form and present it to a registration agent at an AA, VINZ, or VTNZ branch. Once registered, you’ll receive a number plate. Then, you’ll need to have a WoF inspection; you can do this at the same location or go to an independent WoF inspector.
Now that you’re ready to use your trailer, pick up some just-in-case accessories. Trade Tested supplies:
Cage covers: Keep your trailer contents clean and protected from the elements.
Tarpaulins: Ideal for protecting the contents of non-caged trailers.
Spare wheels: Quickly replace your wheels when you need to.
Loading ramps: Easily roll your goods up into the trailer.
