Construction Points:
A good foundation is the key to guaranteeing the longevity and quality of your cabin. Only a completely level, rectangular foundation and bearers will ensure problem-free installation of the cabin.
The floor must be a minimum of 50mm off the ground, preferably more. The underside of the floorboards and the joists should be painted thoroughly and care taken to ensure enough airflow under the house. We recommend using Malthoid DPC between joists and the ground.
Your chosen site must be levelled and compacted to minimise ‘settling’. We recommend using strip or spot foundations, concrete foundations or pavers or a cast concrete bed.
If unsure consult with, or have the foundation prepared by a specialist.

Great little garden room!

2020-12-31T21:42:11+00:00This was a fun little project, took about 3 weeks to complete, in between everything else. Very cool and easy, would recommend using the tiles for the roofing overtop the felt.
Leaky cabin

2020-11-09T19:15:42+00:00Bought this cabin as a project for the garden. Since completion I have have no end of problems with leaks. Every time I think I've got it sorted, I'll discover one elsewhere. I have fully painted the outside, filling all gaps, knots imperfections etc. to a high standard, however the rain still gets in. Endless amounts on silicone has been used to try and sort it without any luck. I have even ripped the floor out and replaced with ply in the attempt to locate and stop leaks. I finished this cabins well over a month ago however have still been unable to use it.

2020-09-28T08:38:44+00:00Great product!! Took a bit of time to go through details and instructions. Having space to lay everything out separately, oiling each piece of wood and piecing it all together. Took time and luckily having a husband with knowledge and patience. In the end 100% worth it. Love love love my new lil house!

2020-09-17T08:20:46+00:00This is an awesome awesome little out house. First I'll run over the minimal negatives. It is very thin, so it is definitely very warm in the sun, but can imagine in winter it may be a tad cold. We have carpet going in and attached power to it so it would not take much to heat up (I'm hoping). Also the manual is pretty generic (displays a different cabin in it) however, if you google it you can find better photos and instructions. There is flooring but be aware you will need a pad built (or concrete) before constructing. MOST IMPORTANTLY It is not treated but we spray gunned it after. Worked brilliantly, HOWEVER, floor joists are not treated, floor boards etc. This could result in a short life span. It is a little short on screws. I'd recommend using galvanized ones that are stronger weather proof. Now the positives.... Nothing was missing and it is 'tun and groove' so it's like a big puzzle. It was easily put together by my partner alone. He is a builder but said it's pretty easy for DIY. You save so much time, confusion and stress by having it all together ready to go. It's a decent size, big enough for a queen bed if needed. We were pleasantly suprised. We knew the measurements but it felt more spacious once built. It is great value and such a brilliant quick way to add an extention or office or in our case a kids music / play pad / separating them from the house for some peace and quiet... a great keep your sanity time haha. I absolutely recommend this product. Very very happy with it... even has lock with keys to keep the kids in haha.

2020-08-13T01:02:17+00:00We purchased our cabin almost a year ago. The pallet that gets delivered is huge and immovable once its dropped off so make sure you know where you are going to put it. The pallet is well packaged and fairly weatherproof - we left it out in the open for several weeks while the weather was rubbish. The parts are not packaged in order so you literally have to unpack the entire pallet to reach some of the first bits you need. When it came to building, it took longer to build the foundation than the actual cabin (ours is on a slope so is on raised poles at the rear). It took us about 2 days to get it completed (although we had already started the roof on day one). As others mentioned, the roofing material isnt great, we used this underneath colorsteel roofing which was just the right size (didnt require cutting). The cabin is pretty solid and has survived a Wellington summer & winter with no visible scars. There was a bit of settling which meant some adjustments to the door after a few months. Im using the cabin as a work from home office which is powered by a solar panel on the roof (except an extension cord for a heater in winter). Only thing I would change is the windows to double glazing if I could.

Tha Wulfingas Hafn

2020-06-19T03:35:08+00:00Built as a base for my 14thC Medieval Household of English archers the Garden House sits in my grounds under a walnut tree. The thing that surprises people is how big it is on the inside: I can easily seat 10 adults without them tripping over each other as well as have a large storage box for bows and arrows. I am past the age of doing construction work, so employed professionals to erect Tha Wulfingas Havn. Their only negative comment was that it took a while to work out the bits as they were not numbered or coded. In summer this may not have been such an issue as we could have laid the parts out on the lawn, but it was too wet to do this. If possible oil/stain the parts first as getting to them after construction, especially the eves can involve a very flexible body! I had them leave off the lattice work on the windows as I wanted a clear view of my grounds. The builder was so impressed he is thinking of getting an Iris himself.

2020-05-06T07:19:53+00:00They don't tell you how high they are. I had to extend the one I bought, three more layers of timber. Cost to get it run plus the fun extending the doors. Recommend- as a cabin; no, as a garden house yes

2020-05-04T23:41:09+00:00Hi My name is Errol Ward and am a qualified builder LBP 100215 and recently had the pleasure of constructing two of your log cabins on our farm out of Havelock Nth. While I felt that your log cabins were well put together there were a couple of things that I felt possible need improving. Firstly I felt that there was no decent connections between the floor joists supplied by you and the foundations that we had formed so I had to call on my building skills to make that a more secure junction. Secondly when it came to the roof we had those malthoid rolls that we spread over the roof and were held down by those supplied small clouts which are pretty hard on your thumbs. Right from the start I was not happy with this technique particularly in NZ conditions and although we had good laps I was reluctant to nail it that way as it was exposed to the elements and so it proved after two days we had a windy day and it ripped in three places so we abandoned that idea and put purlins on top and will put on corrugated iron. Other than those things and the instructions being a bit vague we enjoyed putting them up and they certainly look good. One last thing can you tell me what is the name of the timber they are made of. Thanks

2019-08-27T21:42:20+00:00Reasonably good product for a good price. Fast delivered without issues. Light timber, but looks resident enough when mounted (and painted). Some gaps remained once finished, nothing you cannot fix with a couple of screws... Instructions are a bit simple if you are not IKEA trained... anyway, it’s quite easy to mount. As suggested, unpack everything first and make yourself familiar with the general structure of the unit and the various parts. Some parts had minor damages but not a big deal. Painted with primer first and then paint on top (one coat). Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

2019-06-06T21:19:30+00:00I asked if the cabin could be delivered before the long weekend and no problems, it was delivered on time. No problems building it and it looks great in the back yard. Going to be used as a music studio.
Not great quality
2019-05-31T08:37:12+00:00I extensively searched for the right kitset cabin and thought the reviews on this were great. Unfortunately the product didn’t live up to expectation. Quality was poor - the wood was chipped, huge knot holes and bowed so installation was a nightmare. The roofing is rubbish - won’t last a season and sheds black pebbles all over the garden. I upgraded to shingles thinking it would be a better quality material but it is exactly the same in small ‘tiles’. I ordered the right number of packets to cover the roof and every single one was a different brand and colour to the rest. However, I would never buy from Tradetested again or recommend this product.

2019-05-31T05:42:14+00:00Many people commented on the cabin - they liked the style and structure. Was a little difficult to interpret some of the instructions but got there in the end. Disappointing that some of the wall and roof timbers had splits in them. however, overall the final outcome was positive

2018-11-08T19:29:13+00:00Great cabin easy to construct and amazing service from Tradetested. Real shame that the local delivery company (Toll) let down the whole experience They got no part of their job right 2 weeks to deliver 30 or so kms and still not ‘door to door’

2018-08-31T07:50:21+00:00These were easy to put together and look great. The trick that we would like to pass on is that you need to put the roofing material on on a warm day so that it is more playable as it cracks and tears easily if cold.

Log Cabin Garden House Iris

2018-05-09T21:55:39+00:00Over the past couple of weeks I have built the above Garden House. The positives: Easy to construct Well priced Pleasing design Excellent staff support both on line and by phone The negatives: The unacceptable delay between the date of dispatch and the final delivery. The consignment arrived in ChCh within 4-5 days of dispatch but the trucking firm held it in their yard for no apparent reason and it was not until I phoned them several days later that things starting to move again. The trucking firm apparently had no HIAB in their fleet and were sitting on their hand not knowing what to do next. Anyway I rang Trade Tested to say that things had stalled and a delivery took place a couple of days later. The next problem was that the HIAB truck dumped the load on my property when I was out, no phone call to arrange a delivery date and time (which should be common practice given the value of the consignment) and no delivery docket signature. I took be the best part of a day the carry the material to where it should have been unloaded. I do not accept that "this is not Trade Tested's responsibility" as it is. I accept that the logistics of moving such a large consignment is totally different to freighting a power saw for example but from the customer's point of view the principles are the same. I took a large risk buying such a product on line without seeing it and apart from the transportation shambles I would give a favorable recommendation to anyone buying a Palmako product via Trade Tested
