Construction Points:

A good foundation is the key to guaranteeing the longevity and quality of your cabin. Only a completely level, rectangular foundation and bearers will ensure problem-free installation of the cabin.

The floor must be a minimum of 50mm off the ground, preferably more. The underside of the floorboards and the joists should be painted thoroughly and care taken to ensure enough airflow under the house. We recommend using Malthoid DPC between joists and the ground.

Your chosen site must be levelled and compacted to minimise ‘settling’. We recommend using strip or spot foundations, concrete foundations or pavers or a cast concrete bed.

If unsure consult with, or have the foundation prepared by a specialist.

Q:
Can you tell me if the roof is included? As shown in the picture?
A:
Yes you receive rolls of roofing felt with the kit - if you look at the 'Frequently Bought Together' section above there is an option to add a roofing shingle upgrade kit.

Q:
Hi there! Do you think installing onto a low deck rather than a concrete pad would be a good way to get the required aeration under the floor?
A:
Yes, that would be a great option.

Q:
The door in your pics is shown on the right side when looking at it from the outside...but in the customer pics it is shown on the left side. Which one is correct?
A:
There is no correct answer, you can choose which side you want it to be on.

Q:
Can these be dismantled easily after construction?
A:
We haven't tested this ourselves but we don't think it would be an easy job as you would have to unscrew everything, remove roofing felt which is nailed onto the roof. It's basically designed to be a permanent structure, not to assembled and dismantled multiple times. In short, it's possible but not recommended once assembled.

Q:
The 2x2 Viven says on the photos that the windows are double glazed. This larger one doesn't have a similar picture. Are the window and door double glazed?
A:
This cabin does not have double glazing.

Q:
Could we have the doors at the end of the cabin?
A:
The can't be switched as the wood is pre-cut. You could add extra doors at one end yourself however.

Q:
Morning do these cabins need a building consent? We are in the Wairarapa/ Carterton.
A:
This one is under 10m2, so it should be fine depending on your intended use. We always recommend double checking with your local council.

Iris Cabin

I found the review comments very useful pre-purchase. So hopefully you find this commentary helpful. The build process was really easy and quick. I spent time getting the foundations right using piles, bearers and stainless fixings. I also fixed polythene to the ground for moisture protection. It was useful having the plans prior to delivery so the foundation could be laid. On arrival I extracted the joists from the pack and painted them to assist the pretreated timber. They were then fixed to the bearers. It wasn’t clear in the instructions how to fix the joists. So as well as 90mm screws, I also used Stainless straps (not included) to secure bearers and joists to the walls. I also purchased some wood treatment for the underside of the floor boards and some Expol under floor insulation. The building of the wall’s was quick. The roof did take time, and because I secured the roof panels with two nails, I did run out.. The instructions weren’t clear. Next step was the roof felt. There were a lot of nails used and I did have to climb onto the roof to secure it. Once built we painted the outside of the timber straight away. A few weeks later we have had trouble aligning the doors so they lock properly, and have added an additional lock. To reduce cost I installed some solar lights for the cabin. OverallI I am still very happy with my purchase and have resolved issues.

Fantastic!

Ordered this for a sleepout/ home office/ breakout space to add some much needed space to our house. We’ve just been able to construct it and build it ahead of the recent weather lashing kapiti coast just had. Instructions are a little vague, but easy enough to understand and work out with a bit of thought to review the drawings and fixings schedule. The longest part of this build was getting the foundation pad level and making sure the supplied joists and base pieces were square. After that me and a friend got the entire main wall structure up in a couple of hours. It’s super easy to do and a really fun build. The roof and floor took a little longer due to all the hand nailing and hammering. But from a bare pad to a fully weatherproof cabin in 8 hours with 2 people, it’s well worth the effort. We set this up on a pad of compressed basecourse, with a DPM across the whole thing. Treated the floorboards and lower sections of the wall before installing too. We weren’t able to add on the barge boards or fascias and paint it before the storm hit, but even after some torrential rain, we had zero leaks except for one small bit on the wall facing the heavy rain, and that was due to a knot right on the joint. Nothing a bit of seal and paint can’t fix. Only niggle was that one of the hinge caps on the window was rusty when it arrived, but a quick email later and they shipped out some replacements for me. Something else to consider is the threshold piece east into the joist space for fixing the floorboards, so we constructed a small cleat using a spare bit of supplied timber and trimmed some floorboards by about 18mm and all was grand. Super happy with the product and the customer service, both pre, and post delivery. Highly recommend.

Log cabin Iris

Very pleased

We bought the log cabin Iris, as a garden studio. Communication from the company was excellent, and the delivery company was the same. We laid our own reinforced concrete pad foundation. We are sure that is better than trying to line up piles or a strip foundation in advance. Our placement was slightly off, but with a pad, that was easy to rectify, though we'd recommend you make the foundation a little bigger than the specified dimensions of Iris, as insurance. A short review - the shed exceeded our expectations, and was very easy to put together once we learned to trust the instructions, and not try to read ahead. We are an older couple, and constructed it ourselves on winter hours (late start, early finish) and had our Iris structure complete in two days, with just the exterior oil, optional roof tiles and interior painting to do. The whole process was easy, and required no tools, expertise or parts we didn’t already have - and we’re both desk workers, not builders. Either of us could lift everything (if you’re smaller it’d take two for the door) if needed, but we’d recommend two folk unless you’re an expert. Things like eaves and roof structures are easier with a person each end. In more detail, with tips: We did not have space to lay the pieces out in order for each size, as recommended, but with two large tarps to keep the wood off the ground, we found it useful to unload all the parts onto the tarps, bar roof and floor pieces (packed at the bottom) in piles of size and shape, to make accessing the correct item easier. We were far enough through the build at the end of day one to cover the roof with one of those tarps, and wrap the remaining wood in the other to keep dew off overnight. Trade Tested supplied one extra long wall piece just in case (could be cut down to short wall length if needed) and one extra floorboard, neither of which we needed. The crate itself was made of the same tongue and groove wood, so in a pinch, we could have used that. We received plenty of roof felt, extra roof ’tiles’, and a few surplus of all fastenings in case of fumble fingers. As an aside, the door hinges are adjustable for perfect fit by screwing the pintles on the doors themselves in or out, the instructions did not mention this - the only omission. We ended up using the crate to build a rustic deck, then built a storage box for it using anything left over… Buying the optional tiles improved the look no end, and they were easy to affix. We had ordered the exterior sealant with our Iris, the only extras needed (other than the foundation and fixings between it and the shed) were interior paint and floor polyurethane. We would not hesitate to recommend this, it’s excellent value, seems well made, was easy to put together fast, and exceeded our expectations on appearance. Things to bear in mind: Allow the full time when planning! Also, as said, be very careful if placing your foundation arrangements before your kit arrives. We misread the pad size, then were a little too precise for size - but had placed ours a few centimetres in the wrong direction, and a whisker too narrow. Had we erred slightly too large, we’d have saved some faffing about. Entirely our fault, but something to bear in mind! Also, if you can, don’t open the plastic covering of the pallet until build day. If you want to read the instructions ahead of time, they’re on line. You don’t want to get your wood wet. And don’t worry about trying to read all the few instruction pages ahead - each stage became crystal clear as we went on, and the parts pile reduced.

Loved building this. Read the instructions and sort parts into different catergories first helps a lot. I CD50 every piece before I started the build. Over-engineered my foundations using 4x4 piles and 150x50 bearers with stainless bolts. The decking was left overs from our house deck. Only downer was the quality of the window hardware that deteriorated immediately upon installation. I used bitumen impregnated building paper on the roof before over laying the roof felt and then bitumen shingles on top. I recommend a double layer of tiles slightly overhanging each face to stiffen the edge. My friends say it is too good for a tool shed and that I should rent it out, my wife immediately took ownership to make it her gym space, sigh.....
